from @Daniela: What would happen if the Earth stopped rotating for a second?
Answer: It will be a disaster!!! Right now, in your seat in front the laptop you are moving with the Earth at ~350m/s (faster if you are close to the Equateur). If the Earth stopped spinning for 1 second, you will be projected at the same velocity. It is the same when you have a car accident without your seat belt: the car stops but you keep going. However, If the process happened gradually over billions of years (we slow down with the Earth), you will have very long days.
